Thanks to its many qualities, such as resistance, lightness, transparency, shine and recyclability, PET is extremely appreciated by consumers. It makes sense that they are able to identify with a product that brings so many advantages and that they can trust.

To create a system for identifying packaging, the "American Society of Plastics Industry" developed a symbol that became a standard: three sequential arrows forming a triangle, as shown below. This symbol, together with the numeration system that identifies the nature of the material, allows for the proper identification of PET.
The numeration system in question classifies the plastics with numbers from 1 to 19. PET is identified with the number 1.

This symbol may appear either printed on the lid of the packaging or imprinted into the bottom.

In Europe, the 94/62/EC and 97/129/EC norms establish a numeration system and the abbreviations on which the identification system is based. They also suggest that the packaging display identification indicating whether it is reusable or recoverable.

In Europe the identification is not required.

Some member countries have regulations that make identification obligatory, such as the case with Italy, the Czech Republic and Poland.
