PET is the abbreviation for polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic resin and a form of polyester. Polyethylene terephthalate is a polymer originating from the combination of two monomers called monoethylene glycol (MEG) and terephthalic acid (PTA). At the foundation of this substance are two raw materials derived from petroleum: ethylene and paraxylene.
As a polymer, PET molecules consist of long chains of repetitive units that contain only carbon (C), oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H).
The unitary structure within the rectangle is a repeated unit. The higher the molecular weight (n), the better the properties. Normally, n is understood to be the interval between 100 and 200.
